PHOENIX - VIRTUAL - Antarctica South Pole VULTRA - Unlimited

New for 2021 - Introducing the very first of our 'UNLIMITED' class of VULTRA; the Antarctica South Pole VULTRA.

Following in the legendary footsteps of Robert Falcon Scott, we've recreated his 1911/1912 journey to the South Pole as closely as we can to give you the chance to 'virtually' run the 862 mile route and complete your very own epic Antarctica expedition to the South Pole.

The Antarctica South Pole VULTRA is the next level in our popular VULTRA series of events, and will be the first of our 'Unlimited-VULTRA's'. This is a standalone event, so not part of the VULTRA-Six series (a series of six consecutive VULTRA events, lasting 2 months each and held over a calendar year) or linked with the Super-VULTRA series. The Antarctica South Pole VULTRA gives you an almost unlimited amount of time to complete it starting from January 1st 2021 you have up to 2 years to cover the mileage and it really does have something for everyone; from seasoned ultra runners to those who are new to running and want to try something totally epic. You can complete this VULTRA on your own terms; take a month, take a year; do as much or as little mileage as and when you like and keep chipping away until you reach the South Pole. Oh and of course there will be the epic bling - obviously. You are really going to love this one!

The route will start at Scott's Hut near McMurdo and then we'll be following the Ice Runway Road to the McMurdao Air Station and from there we'll be spending the next 400 miles or so crossing the Ross Ice Shelf. We'll then have the brutal 100 mile ascent of the Beardmore Glacier to contend with before we face another 300+ miles straight to the South Pole.

The event will officially start on New Year's Day; Friday 1st January 2021- there will be a Facebook race brief in the chat groups. The event will then run for as long as it takes you to complete the mileage

The exciting bit :

You'll get a bespoke, sequential BIB when you sign up. There will be a route map (although much of the map from the Beardmore Glacier onward is 'lots of white') and a central results and progress landing page on the Phoenix Running VULTRA tab on the website. Each competitor will have their own virtual location pin (complete with their name and BIB number for tracking your virtual progress). You can even add your profile picture in your Phoenix World settings. Once you start your virtual run you'll submit your mileage as you go which, once approved, will automatically move you along the map. The route is 862 miles along a recently mapped route design to follow in Scott's footsteps. Pretty cool, hey. Once you've submitted enough mileage to get to the finish at the Pole then you are an official finisher of the Antarctica South Pole VULTRA - Unlimited! Your total miles and total time will be added to the finisher results, you'll show as 'COMPLETE' be able to download your finishers certificate and we'll send you your epic bling!

This is a challenge for literally anyone of any running ability. If you're new to running, fancy something a bit different in 2021, or fancy your first foray into multi-day endurance challenges, want to practice running consistent distances over consecutive days, or just want to see how many miles you can run in a week, month, year then this is for you. And, if you're a seasoned ultra runner, then we'd love to have you aboard to see if you can cover the distance all in one go.
