The Nearly But Not Quite London Marathon
Sunday, 26 April 2020
With the recent outbreak of Coronavirus, both globally and in the UK, there has been the cancellation of a number of large running events. Whilst we fully understand the reason for the cancellation of these large events, we believe it is a shame for runners who have prepared for a number of weeks and raised money for charity.
We are therefore putting on a small scale event, with up to 200 runners for anyone who wishes to run either a marathon or a half-marathon on 26th April 2020. Whilst this is the date of the London Marathon, which currently is still going ahead, we recognise a lot of runners have already had events abroad cancelled. We are therefore going to open 25% of places now, a further 25% of places should the London Landmarks Half Marathon get cancelled and all the remaining places should the London Marathon or other large spring marathons get cancelled.
We have two entry prices, the first being a run only price as this covers costs such as transaction fees, council fees, venue fees, food and drinks at the aid station.
The second price is an entry and medal price. If all our spaces are filled, then the profit we generate will all be given to charity. We believe it is unethical to try and profit from a crisis such as this and any profits we generate will be given to Antibiotic Research Charity. Whilst this virus isn't something that can be fought using antibiotics, there is a potential future crisis with antibiotic resistance increasing meaning common infections could become deadly. Our contribution will be a drop in the ocean, but i's a drop that otherwise would not be there.
How will the event work?
We want the majority of entrants to be running a marathon. However, we are also aware that other events in the UK and abroad have been cancelled which are shorter. Therefore, we will have a limited number of half marathon distances available to 50 runners. We will not have any distances other than these.
If you are running the half marathon distance, you will need to complete 4 laps of 3.28 miles. If you are running the marathon distance, it will be 6 laps of 4.37 miles you will need to complete.
When you have finished, we will record your official time and if you have opted for a medal you will receive your medal and a goody bag which contains goodies!
The course is flat and fast and will run along the Thames Path, so you need no navigational experience. Importantly, at the end of each lap you will have the great support of our aid table (believe us it's much much better than you would get at the London Marathon too!). If you are a vegan runner, we have so much choice for you too!!
